The plane had landed at Ataturk Airport after completing a flight from the city of Izmir. All passengers had disembarked and the aircraft was being cleaned and serviced by ground crew.
The explosion reportedly took place after one of the cleaners picked up and opened a bag or parcel left on one of the seats. According to new reports, the man lost an arm in the blast and at least one of his co-workers was also injured.
Some reports say that the next scheduled flight for the THY aircraft was to Brussels.
The bombing takes place as NATO leaders are in Istanbul for the second day of the alliance’s head of government summit. Following the conclusion of the meeting later Tuesday, the NATO delegations are scheduled to fly out of Ataturk Airport.
