Speaking soon after the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that the 1999 trial of Ocalan was flawed, Dengir Fırat, deputy chairman of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), said that the government would discuss what steps to take after the courts decision. The Turkish Republic is a state based on the rule of law and will undertake the procedures that the law requires, said Fırat. Saying that the ECHR ruling only dealt with procedural matters pertaining to the 1999 case that saw Ocalan convicted of treason and sentenced to death, later commuted to life imprisonment, Fırat said that the court did not query the final verdict. The retrial, if there is going to be one, will be only procedural, Fırat said. | ||||
