| | | The ruling by the court on an appeal by Öcalans lawyers means that Turkey will retry the man found guilty of leading a nearly two decade long insurrection of his outlawed group the PKK. According to the ruling of the ECHR, Öcalan was not given a fair hearing in his case and that he did not have full access to his lawyers, as required by international treatys Ankara was a party to. Öcalan was originally sentenced to death for leading an armed revolt against the Turkish state. However, with the banning of the death penalty in Turkey, this was changed to life imprisonment without remission.
