| | | | Justice Minister and government spokesman Cemil Çiçek said that the decision of the ECHR in Strasbourg had ruled that there were procedural errors in the original trial, which had found Ocalan guilty of treason, rather than the essence of the case.
“No one should get worried over it,” Çiçek said, though he added that some in Europe might try to push this decision into the political dimension.
Çiçek said that this issue could be brought before Turkey as part of its EU membership process but added it would not happen tomorrow.
Çiçek underlined that the approach to terrorism and terrorists had not changed but also said that the original court case against Öcalan had been opened in 16 February 1999, before the present government came to power.
